Birth Control Counseling and Management

With all of the birth control methods available these days, it’s normal to have questions or feel overwhelmed by your options. Each woman has unique needs, and the right birth control should support your health, your lifestyle, and your sexual practices.

When choosing a birth control method, it’s helpful to consider questions like:

  • Do I want to have children soon or in the distant future?

  • How will my body tolerate hormones?

  • What type of birth control is best for my lifestyle and my sexual habits?

  • What would I do if my contraception method failed?

The right birth control can make you feel confident, empowered, and safe.

Mammogram Management

One in eight women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. However, 90 percent of breast cancers can be treated successfully if the cancer is detected early. Mammograms are one of the most effective weapons for early detection. We screen and diagnose cancer in many ways.

Changes in your breasts are often early warning signs. Checking your breasts yourself at least once a month not only helps you have a good idea of what they should look and feel like – it means you’ll know right away if something changes. Any changes should be reported to your provider and followed up on. Changes could include a new lump or mass, swelling, skin indentation on your breast, redness, or nipple discharge.

Menopause Management

Menopause often brings uncomfortable symptoms, such as hot flashes and fatigue. We know how these troublesome symptoms can negatively impact a woman’s quality of life. We provide the highest standard of health care before, during, and after menopause with treatments centered on improving your quality of life and reducing your symptoms.

Evaluation and Management of Abnormal PAP smears

Getting regular Pap tests and STI screening is an essential part of maintaining the health of women worldwide. In the United States alone, millions of women receive testing yearly and seek information to help ensure they are getting the best care possible. If you are wondering why Pap tests are so necessary, and how often you should be receiving one, we are here to help clear that up. Pap tests, also known as Pap smears and STI testing is available at our clinic as part of your preventative care.

A pap smear is a test performed to screen your cervix for the presence of abnormal cells that can indicate the presence of various medical conditions. The primary concern being tested for is cervical cancer, which is most often the result of infection with the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV). Pap smears are not performed to test for HPV, but when abnormal cells are found, it is a clear indication that HPV is present.

Screening for Sexually Transmitted Diseases

A regular STI test should be a normal part of anyone who has a sexually active life involving one or more non-exclusive partners. The higher the number of sexual partners, the more vital it is that you be tested regularly to ensure that you haven’t contracted an STI and can be sure not to spread it if you do. Regardless of the number of partners you have, it can be difficult to impossible to determine that someone is carrying an STI. Below are the tests you will receive as part of a routine STI screening.

  • Gonorrhea and Chlamydia – Those who are under the age of 25 and are sexually or have non-exclusive partners and are over the age of 25 should receive regular testing. Those who have experienced sexual violence should receive testing as well.

  • Syphilis, Hepatitis, HIV – Everyone should receive at least one screening for HIV in their lifetimes. If you have had multiple partners since your last screening, you should ensure this test is part of your treatment.

Hormone Imbalance

Hormonal imbalance in women occurs when there is too much or too little of the female sex hormones in the bloodstream. Hormones are natural substances produced in the body to help relay messages between cells and organs and affect many bodily functions. The two main female sex hormones are estrogen and progesterone. Females also produce and need a small amount of testosterone.

Estrogen is the major female hormone. It is primarily produced by the ovaries and small amounts are produced in the adrenal glands and fat cells. During pregnancy, the placenta also makes estrogen.

Estrogen promotes the development and maintenance of female characteristics in the human body, including breasts, pubic and armpit hair, and the regulation of the menstrual cycle and reproductive system.

Estrogen also plays a big role in reproductive and sexual development, including puberty, menstruation, pregnancy, and menopause.

Progesterone is produced by the ovaries after ovulation. During pregnancy, the placenta also produces progesterone.

Progesterone is responsible for

  • Preparing the lining of the uterus for a fertilized egg

  • Supporting pregnancy

  • Suppressing estrogen production after ovulation

Incontinence Management

Urinary incontinence in women is a common complaint and may have a profound negative impact on a woman’s quality of life. One out of four women over the age of 18 experiences some bladder leakage. Unfortunately, this number may increase with many factors such as age and childbearing.

There are three main types of incontinence:

  • Stress incontinence – Leakage with cough or sneeze often due to prolapse or pelvic floor changes.

  • Urge incontinence – Overactive bladder muscle.

  • Mixed incontinence – Both stress and urge issues.

There are many approved treatment options for all three types of urinary incontinence. This may range from medications to physical therapy to surgery.

The important thing to know is that a woman does not have to “put up” with bladder leakage and should not be afraid to discuss these symptoms with her medical provider. An evaluation in the office can help determine the type of incontinence to tailor the treatment for each individual patient.

The most common menstrual disorders are:

  • Amenorrhea

  • Dysmenorrhea
